Businesses CAN Be Part of the Solution

What is SMILES?

The SouthCoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning, Education and Service (SMILES) is a one-to-one mentoring program. Volunteer mentors meet with their students for one hour each week at the student’s school. The mentors and their students are given an opportunity to get to know each other through activities in a group setting.

Would you like to have a positive influence on your community?

Then you may be interested in joining SMILES, SouthCoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning, Education & Service. SMILES is a broad coalition of community non-profit organizations, businesses, faith groups, public schools, and political leaders dedicated to reducing the high drop out rate and youth risk behaviors by providing caring mentors to every child in need of one.

What is mentoring?

Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who can help the youths reach their personal and academic potential. A SMILES Mentor is a positive adult role model who is able to provide a child with guidance, support, and encouragement. A mentor must be a good listener who can help a child find and develop their strengths. That connection may be the key to turning a young life in a positive direction.

How do I become a SMILES mentor?

By calling the SMILES office at 508-999-9300 and signing up for the next SMILES mentor training session. Mentor training is only 2 hours, and is normally held in the early evening on a weekday in New Bedford or Fall River.
